How to seal Granite Countertops?

Sealing granite countertops

Granite countertops lend an aesthetic value to the room, kitchen and bathroom. Depending on its usage and type of granite, it should be resealed every year or once in 18 months. If you are using the countertop to chop acidic fruits and vegetables, it needs to be resealed. It also depends on the type of cleanser being used to wipe the countertops. Since granite is porous in nature, it can absorb any liquid on the surface leaving a stain. The sealant will not allow liquids from seeping into the granite.

A step-by-step procedure is followed to seal a granite:

  1. First, you need to check if the granite countertop in your house needs a sealer. Soak a paper towel or white cotton cloth and keep it on the countertop. Leave it for 5 minutes. Remove the paper towel or cloth. If the area is dark or discolored, the granite needs to be sealed.
  2. If the countertop needs a sealant, remove everything from the countertop. Wash the granite countertop with soap-based water, wipe it dry and leave it overnight for any moisture to evaporate.
  3. Spray the entire surface with liquid granite sealer. Work in smaller sections. Wipe down the surface with a soft cotton cloth. Apply the sealer using a spray bottle or a brush or rag on the countertop. Leave it to dry for a few minutes, depending on the instructions on the bottle. The sealer will penetrate into the stone, creating a protection layer. This will protect the countertop from absorbing liquid.
  4. Leave it for at least 25 to 30 minutes. The stone will absorb the sealer.
  5. Once the sealer is more or less dry, apply the sealer once again on the granite, then rub it with a dry cotton cloth or rag. Repeat the same process 2 to 3 times depending on the type of granite. Light colored granites need to be coated a couple of times more than dark granites because they are more porous. Some dark colored granites have dense textures, so sealing is not necessary.
  6. Wait for 2 to 3 hours and then apply the sealer once again. The waiting period depends on the brand of sealer being used.

A good quality sealer should be resistant to water and oil-based stains. There are certain solvent base sealers that work for years. Get in touch with a quartz countertop fabricator Fairfax who will seal granite countertops depending on the quality of granite you choose.
